Glossary

A shared language for spatial work.

Clear definitions for the physical-to-digital production workflow. Each term links to a deeper guide.

Projection mapping

Aligning projected media to physical surfaces so the image responds to their shape and features. It may use flat or dimensional geometry.

Video projection mapping

Projection mapping using moving-image media. The term describes a production technique; this company specializes in the reality capture that can support it.

LiDAR

Light detection and ranging: a measurement technology that uses laser light to determine distances. Laser scanners can use different ranging methods.

Reality capture

Documenting physical conditions as digital information, using methods such as laser scanning and photogrammetry. The capture method should follow the intended use.

Point cloud

A collection of points located in three-dimensional space. Depending on capture, points may also include attributes such as color or intensity.

Point-cloud registration

Aligning individual scans into a common spatial reference. Registration quality needs review; joining datasets does not automatically establish survey accuracy.

Mesh

A surface representation made from connected vertices, edges and faces. A scan-derived mesh can contain interpolation and simplification, so it is distinct from the measured points.

Projection surface

The physical surface receiving projected media, including its depth, edges, material and relation to the projection system.

Scenic geometry

The shape and spatial relationships of built scenery, including sculpted forms, show sets, relief and themed facades.

Existing conditions

The physical state of a site or object at a defined time. Changes after capture can make some information out of date.

Media server

A system used to manage and play media in a production workflow. Depending on the system, it may also handle mapping, compositing and other processing.

Projection alignment

Matching the projected output to intended physical features. Geometry, reference features, projector setup and calibration all influence the workflow.

Previsualization

Using a digital representation to explore an experience before on-site production. It helps evaluate assumptions but does not substitute for field verification.
