Point cloud & 3D spatial data

Raw scan positions, registered point clouds and production meshes serve different purposes. A useful data handoff makes those differences clear and gives the receiving team an agreed spatial reference.

Who needs it and when

For teams that need measured geometry organized for review, modeling or a production pipeline. Define the handoff before fieldwork so capture and processing serve the final use.

What the process involves

  1. Agree units, origin, orientation and reference information.
  2. Define coverage, registration review and required deliverables.
  3. Identify the measured reference and any derived or simplified geometry.
  4. Review a representative handoff with the receiving team before final release.

Define what your team receives

Registered point clouds are measured references. Meshes represent surfaces derived from those measurements, with possible interpolation and simplification. Exact formats, model detail, UV scope and compatibility must be confirmed for your project.

What happens next

Keep the measured reference available while derived assets move into content and AV workflows. Document any transformations, exclusions and modeling assumptions.

UNDERSTAND THE DATA

From the physical surface
to a spatial handoff.

01 / CAPTURE

Measured points

Individual observations record visible geometry. Registration places scans in a shared reference.

02 / PREPARE

Derived surface

A mesh connects vertices into faces. Detail, simplification and gaps need an agreed modeling scope.

XYZ
03 / HAND OFF

Shared coordinates

Confirm units, origin, orientation and file requirements with the receiving production team.

Conceptual diagrams explaining the data pathway. They are not scan samples or promised deliverables; the project scope defines the handoff.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Clarify the scope.

Which file formats will we receive?

The formats are confirmed during scoping with your receiving team. Tell us how the information will be used and which applications need to import it.

Is a denser point cloud always better?

No. Density, registration, accuracy, coverage and usability are different qualities. Required detail should follow the intended production task.
