Reality capture for projection mapping
Reality capture is the broader workflow of documenting a physical environment as digital spatial information. The right approach starts with the decision your team needs to make, then defines the capture, processing and handoff around it.
Who needs it and when
For attraction operators, agencies and multidisciplinary teams coordinating an existing environment. Begin when drawings are incomplete, built conditions are uncertain or several suppliers need one spatial starting point.
What the process involves
- Identify the production decisions the data must support.
- Agree the capture area, control or reference approach, detail and review requirements.
- Capture and process the visible environment using the agreed methodology.
- Review the handoff with the creative and technical teams.
Define what your team receives
The handoff may combine measured spatial data with project-defined imagery or models. Each output must have a clear purpose, coordinate reference and agreed scope; a digital twin is not assumed.
What happens next
Teams can use the shared reference to compare design assumptions with measured conditions and prepare a more informed production plan.
UNDERSTAND THE DATA
From the physical surface
to a spatial handoff.
Measured points
Individual observations record visible geometry. Registration places scans in a shared reference.
Derived surface
A mesh connects vertices into faces. Detail, simplification and gaps need an agreed modeling scope.
Shared coordinates
Confirm units, origin, orientation and file requirements with the receiving production team.
Conceptual diagrams explaining the data pathway. They are not scan samples or promised deliverables; the project scope defines the handoff.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Clarify the scope.
Do we need laser scanning if we already have a model?
Possibly. Compare how the model was created, its current relevance and its detail against the installed surface. In some workflows an existing model or camera-based calibration may be sufficient.
Is reality capture the same as a digital twin?
No. A scan is a snapshot of measured conditions. A digital twin typically involves additional structured information and ongoing connection to the represented asset.
